Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon has issued a cease-and-desist order against a Canadian business that was telephoning Missourians and falsely telling them they won a Canadian lottery prize.
Employees of the Montreal business, International Protection Center, told Missourians they needed to pay a $700 fee to claim their $1 million jackpot.
None of the Missourians who contacted Nixon's office about the scam sent money to Canada to claim a prize.
If the company violates the cease and desist order, Nixon could file state felony charges of unlawful merchandising practices. The maximum penalty upon conviction of such charges is four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
