Gambling Etiquette: Knowing the Rules

It’s an easy solution to an all too perplexing problem: online casinos offer endless rewards, allowing you to play without the usual complications. Their brick and mortar counterparts boast endless rules and regulations. Etiquette is required — with you forced to stumble awkwardly from table to table, uncertain if you’re doing what you should.

The Internet offers an answer, however. The demands of virtual rooms will surely be lessened. You can play as you please, without having to worry about the aftermath.

This is the assumption of many novice gamers. It’s also, however, an assumption that could result in lost bets, frustrated dealers and eventual banishment.

The online world isn’t immune to etiquette. Players are still governed by expectations — specifically regarding tables and their rules. All individuals must be aware of how to play their games before entering a room. Fumbling through the rounds will only cause frustration (lessening other users’ abilities to enjoy themselves). Having to reference rules or strategies will disrupt the flow, slowing rounds and causing others to flee. This reflects poorly on the casinos and will often secure a reprimand.

It’s essential that all users study each game they wish to attempt. Refusing to do this is a breach of conduct, and one that proves a complete lack of respect for gambling itself. Choosing to simply bluff through each round (without noting betting minimums or established practices) will cause confusion — and that is never tolerated.

Etiquette doesn’t disappear online. It instead remains and must be adhered to.

Is Online Poker Really Poker?

Online poker has been wildly popular for years now. But can it really claim to be the same game as physical poker? Die-hard serious poker players say no.

Why not, you say? You still get dealt a hand of cards. You still get to bet on them. Computers are able to simulate the random chance of a shuffled 52-card deck, with the same probabliity of getting a full house as the real thing. The luck of the draw is there. Sure. But where is the skill?

It takes courage to bet your savings on four kings when your opponent might have four aces. Perhaps even strategy. But it doesn’t take skill.

Online poker, like many other ways of gambling, captures the thrill of winning or losing money based on random chance. But it doesn’t capture that which makes poker what it is: poker is about reading people. It is about learning your opponent’s “tell,” learning about what they are giving away about their hand with each twitch. It is about knowing when people are lying, and when they are secretly happy. And, conversely, it teaches you to deceive people, to lie convincingly, to betray no emotion. As Lady Gaga knows, it is all about the “Poker Face.”

This is what makes poker what it is, and it cannot be done virtually. The sites let you chat, which gives you some insight into who you are playing with, but chatting is optional, and that still photo next to your name is the ultimate poker face. If you want to play a complex game of skill, stick to real poker.

Has Online Poker Affected Gambling Destinations?

If you like to gamble, you probably travel to places like Las Vegas and other traditional destinations. That’s where most people who gamble go, because they know that it’s one of the best places for gamblers of all kinds to get involved with the game. Now, though, there’s competition from an unlikely source – the Internet. Online poker and other types of online games are affecting how many people travel to gambling destinations, since it’s so much easier and quite a bit less expensive to just sit in the comfort and privacy of your own home and play poker. You don’t have to travel anywhere, pay for airfare and a hotel, or anything like that.
Of course, you also don’t get quite the same experience. You can play poker, and you can win money, but you won’t get the chance to sit at great custom poker tables and be offered free drinks. You also won’t get to check out the buffet or any of the shows that you can enjoy if you’re playing poker in Las Vegas. In some ways, online gambling has hurt the revenues of places like Vegas, but it has also made some people more interested in traveling to places where they can gamble ‘for real.’ That’s good for Vegas, Atlantic City and other popular destinations.
Televised poker tournaments have also increased the popularity of gambling, both online and offline. People use online casinos to practice, and then they go to Vegas or other places and get involved in poker tournaments. By that time, they may have perfected their skills enough that they can actually make some money at the poker table, instead of losing all that they came in with. That’s a great feeling, to be able to win. While poker does require some luck, there is a lot of skill and knowledge involved in being good at it.
