JACKPOT ADVISORY: $96 Million SuperLotto Plus Jackpot Up for Grabs; California Lottery’s Sixth Largest Jackpot In History
SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 21, 2003–Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto Plus jackpot for Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at $96 million. “Sales are brisk and we are thrilled to be able to raise the jackpot to make it the sixth largest in history,” said Lottery CEO, Tony Molica. “Just last August, one lucky Californian, Patricia Frierson, won $91 million. It’s anyone’s guess who will be next.” California’s schools will receive more than $58 million from this jackpot.
A single jackpot winner of $96 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment being $2.4 million and the 26th payment being more than $4.8 million before taxes. The estimated cash value would equal roughly half of the jackpot, $48 million or the amount the Lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner. The retailer would receive $480,000 for selling the winning jackpot ticket.
On February 16, 2002, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $193 million and was won by 3 winning tickets purchased in Montebello, Orange and Half Moon Bay. Alcario Castellano of San Jose, California made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $141 million on June 23, 2001.
